Premier League leaders Liverpool have sprung a surprise after being knocked out in the fourth round of the FA Cup by bottom side Plymouth.

A solitary penalty goal from Scotsman Ryan Hardie was enough to knock out the Reds , just three days after Arne Slot's men had sealed their place in the final of the other domestic cup.

The home side, who had already knocked out another Premier League team, Brentford, in the previous round, were a tougher nut to crack than Liverpool had expected, unable to trouble goalkeeper Conor Hazard much until the desperate attacks of the final stretch.

Criticism of Luis Diaz

Following the defeat, several players under Arne Slot have been heavily criticised by the English media and Luis Díaz is no exception. The Colombian played the full 90 minutes of the match and had few chances to score.

Liverpool Echo , a media outlet focused on the Anfield team, was one of the first to give Díaz a bad rating. “The referee didn’t give him much protection and, as a consequence, he got a little discouraged. Too inconsistent participation in the second half,” it reads about the Colombian’s performance.

Anfield Watch was also another outlet that was highly critical of the Colombian: “For Luis Díaz, one of the club’s most experienced players, excuses simply do not exist. The Colombian has been battling with Gakpo all season for playing time on the left wing, and Slot has often fielded him as a centre forward in an attempt to cover for Jota and Núñez’s inefficiencies in attack.”

For now, both Díaz and Liverpool must turn the page, as an important match is coming up to further secure their Premier League lead. This Wednesday the Reds will face Everton in the match they had pending for the 15th round of the English league.
