Liverpool moved five points ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League table with Jürgen Klopp's first win away at Brentford. The Gunners and the Etihad side both play later today and even then, Pep Guardiola's men will still have a game in hand incidentally against Thomas Frank's team.
This is how Klopp humiliated Manchester City and Guardiola before his departure
Darwin Núñez was in a confident mood and he and Diogo Jota both had acres of space on the counter-attack to open the scoring. Jota sent on a header into the Uruguayan's path and he coolly chipped the ball over the outrushing Mark Flekken. Shortly after, though, things turned for the worse. Curtis Jones had already had to go off with an injury following a strong challenge when Jota was stretchered off thanks to a heavy landing on his knee. Both players have been vital for the Reds in recent times but neither could last the first half just over a week before the Carabao Cup final.
Alexis Mac Allister got a second goal for Liverpool after the interval and from there on in it was a quiet game. Liverpool was able to control things and see out what was ultimately a comfortable victory. Ivan Toney got a goal back but the Reds won 4-1 in the end with substitutes Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo also scoring.
Núñez never really inspires confidence when he is running through on goal; you just never quite know what you're going to get with him. This time, though, he was emphatic. That was the kind of finish he was going regularly when Liverpool saw him at Benfica but it hasn't really happened enough since he moved to Anfield.
Quansah has revealed his secret to becoming the Reds' next leader on defense
Losing Jones and then Jota was not a good sign at all for Liverpool. Just when the fixtures are going to really mount up, there could be a midweek fixture every week until the end of the season from here, both key men limped off. Jones has been vital in controlling things in the middle of the pitch and Jota scores and assists goals regularly. Salah is back but as ever, it's a case of one in and at least one out for Klopp at the moment. His wincing reaction to Conor Bradley being on the end of a hard tackle said everything you need to know about the Reds' injury situation at the moment.
