Liverpool's title rivals will be keeping a close eye on Sunday's trip to Bournemouth as Jürgen Klopp's side return to Premier League action after its winter break. The Reds still sit top of the table after only Manchester City could pick up a win last weekend while Tottenham and Aston Villa dropped points. Arsenal is also in action against Crystal Palace on Sunday but Liverpool knows it can end the weekend five points clear at the top with a victory. The Reds must do so without a host of key men, either through injury or unavailability, but Klopp will be hopeful of another victory.
Plot against him, Haaland and City could ruin Liverpool negotiations
There has been little transfer business at the top end of the Premier League with teams seemingly reluctant to spend big in the January window. But could a late addition make all the difference in the race for the title? Liverpool has shown in the past that value can be found at the mid-way point in the season and the rest of the chasing pack may look for signings in the final weeks of the window to close the gap.
Manchester City is reportedly looking to take two Premier League stars back to the Etihad this summer after letting both of them depart previously. Pedro Porro signed for City in 2019 but never made a first-team appearance and later moved to Sporting Lisbon before joining Tottenham. Porro has been a big hit under Ange Postecoglou and Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on re-signing him along with mooted Liverpool target Douglas Luiz. The Aston Villa midfielder, who also spent two years on City's books, has caught the eye of a number of clubs with some impressive performances in the Premier League this season.
Liverpool and Arsenal have been long-term admirers of Luiz, as have Barcelona, with Villa demanding a fee of around €117m. Tottenham value Porro at around the same mark but that has not stopped City from considering a swoop, according to Football Insider. It is claimed both are on Guardiola's radar ahead of the summer despite City facing the prospect of coughing up huge prices for players they let go for cheap. An outlay of around $250m would be truly incredible, with the pair allowed to leave for more like $28m.
Blocked with England, Southgate does not clarify situation with Liverpool
As Liverpool plotted its midfield rebuild last year, Fluminense star André was one of the names regularly linked with a move. It never materialized and the Brazilian stayed put, with ESPN suggesting he in fact rejected a switch to Anfield. He helped his side win the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history in November and André now believes the time is right to move to Europe. But it appears Liverpool won't be reigniting its interest, with Fulham now said to be in pole position. The Premier League side held talks with the player last year and have now launched a €35m bid for his signature, reports Ben Jacobs. Fulham reportedly sees André as the perfect replacement for midfield star João Palhinha, who remains the subject of interest from Bayern Munich after a move fell through last summer.
