Liverpool did themselves justice in a frantic match against Newcastle as they won, liked and scored to remain sole leaders of the 2023/2024 Premier League. Mohamed Salah scored a brace, stealing the limelight from Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who saved his side's goal repeatedly.

It was a great game at Anfield, but it was almost all the home side, who tried everything they could to beat the tough Dubravka goalkeeper, who eventually had four goals scored against him despite his saves and a saved penalty. Colombia's Luis Diaz also stood out, with a first half of note, but he did not get the reward 'Lucho' was looking for, as he had a goal disallowed, and his team-mate Salah was unable to convert the penalty given to the '7'.

Salah missed the penalty in the 22nd minute, and the first half was goalless. But in the second half the rain did not only fall from the sky, as there was also a scoring storm. In the 49th minute, Díaz received on the left, played a beautiful ball to Darwin Núñez, and the Uruguayan set up the Egyptian for the 1-0. Unfairly, Newcastle equalised in the 54th minute through Sweden's Alexander Isak. By that stage Dubravka had saved everything. On 65 minutes, Jürgen Klopp had the key to the game, as he brought on Díaz and Núñez to shake up the attack.

The evidence that it was a penalty

The changes paid off: Curtis Jones (74') and Cody Gakpo (78') scored to make it 3-1 to the Reds and almost put the game to bed. And although Botman pulled one back for the Magpies in the 81st minute, Liverpool were awarded another penalty on 86 minutes, which this time Salah did take to score his brace and seal the game 4-2.
