Even after the victory, Liverpool received some long-awaited news

Arsenal are already on Liverpool's tail in the race for the Premier League title. In a cold and error-strewn game, the Gunners made the most of a mess between Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker to take all three points in London (3-1) and remain just one step behind the Reds (3-1) at the top of the table.

Defeat to Arsenal shows who is Liverpool's indispensable player

Mikel Arteta's side inflicted Liverpool's first domestic defeat since losing to Tottenham Hotspur with Luis Diaz's goal famously disallowed for offside. It was a lacklustre, dominating win that was settled by a second-half mistake between Van Dijk and Alisson that left Martinelli empty-handed to seal the three points.

Arteta's side's dominance was soon transformed into a goal after 14 minutes when Zinchenko broke inside, found Martin Odegaard in the '10′ position and the Norwegian dismantled Liverpool's defensive line with a first-time touch that left Kai Havertz alone. William Saliba shielded a ball over Luis Diaz inside the box, but the Colombian ran at him and robbed him of his wallet. He got his toe to the ball and his shot hit Gabriel's hand and flew into the net. Out of nowhere, Liverpool struck gold. But football, for once justly, imparted equality and in the 67th minute it returned the catastrophe to Liverpool, who, on an innocent long ball, let the game slip away.

It was not helped by the sending off of Ibrahima Konaté in the 88th minute for a double yellow after two unnecessary fouls, which left the Reds even more unprotected and allowed Leandro Trossard, with help again from Van Dijk, who deflected the Belgian's shot and changed the trajectory to Alisson, to kill the game in stoppage time.
