Liverpool's debut in this Champions League season 2022-2023 was not the best at all, as in just 45 minutes, the Gli Azzurri in front of their home fans showed the bad football displayed by the English team in almost all sectors of the pitch, highlighting in defence the bad moment of Joe Gomez who has been partly responsible for the fall of his goal on a couple of occasions.

Social media was quickly flooded with comments about the English defender's performance in the game, with some users and Reds fans calling for his substitution for the second half, while others mocked the player with memes comparing him to Manchester United's Harry Maguire, a defender who has also been criticised by Red Devils fans for his poor performances.

But beyond the criticisms made by Liverpool fans, what was surprising was the publication made by Jaime Carragher, former player and defender of the Reds until 2013. The Briton expressed his displeasure with a horror first 45 minutes in the Jürgen Klopp era, pointing out the shambles that is the defence and how poorly Gomez has done, having to be replaced in his view by Joel Matip.

Although Joe has had some consistency in the Premier League helping his team to keep clean sheets in games against Bournemouth and Everton, some actions on the pitch have cast doubt on a fan base that is screaming for his exit from the institution, as with Maguire at United, both are hated and mocked on social media.

What's next for Liverpool

Liverpool's poor result at the  Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Italy extended that negative run against Napoli away, and while defeat will always be collective for a team, the English defender's poor form did play a part in the Reds returning home with a scandalous 4-1 defeat and having to turn the page quickly to focus on Wolves on Saturday.
