Liverpool won 3-0 away to Ajax on Wednesday, a result that sent the Reds through to the last 16 of the Champions League and eliminated the Dutch side in the fifth round of the group stage. Mohamed Salah (42) opened the scoring in the closing minutes of the first half before Darwin Nunez (49) and Harvey Elliott (52) put the game beyond doubt just after the restart.

With this result, Liverpool are second in Group A with 12 points, three behind leaders Napoli who, with a clean sheet, lead Group A with 15 points. The Italian side must visit Anfield on the sixth and final matchday in a top-of-the-table clash in which they have the advantage after beating Liverpool 4-1 in the first leg.

Ajax, with just three points, are third and virtually a Europa League team, having beaten bottom side Rangers 4-0 in the first leg and boasting a far superior overall goal difference to the Scots ahead of the meeting at Ibrox Park on 1 November. Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez scored again for his side on Wednesday. He did it on the penultimate day of the Champions League group stage with an unassailable header. It was almost 49 minutes in when the match was 1-0. The Uruguayan was positioned on the corner of the box, anticipated the Ajax defence and ended up connecting the cross from left to right on the penalty spot.

In the first half, the sky-blue striker had had a clear chance to put his team ahead, which he failed to take advantage of. The ball, with the goalkeeper beaten in that case, crashed against the post. With his goal on Wednesday, Nunez took his tally to five goals in his last six starts. His Liverpool side eventually defeated Ajax 3-0. The Uruguayan joined the English side at the start of the season after a successful spell in Portuguese football, where he played for Benfica.

Klopp concerned about Hendo injury

It was in the 71st minute when the Reds captain had a collision with Mexico's Edson Alvarez and received a blow to his right knee that left him lying on the pitch. This prompted the medical team to come in and the German coach's face became dislocated. This would turn out to be another injury for the Reds, who have suffered badly so far this season due to injuries.
