In a press conference, manager Jürgen Klopp acknowledged the fitness problems of his players, which prevented him from repeating the team on several occasions: "When you want it to really click, you need consistency in the line-up and we haven't had that. When you have a lot of injuries, players who should be rested have to play and players come back from injuries too soon. That's complicated. You don't fix that situation overnight," said the disgruntled German.

He added: "We've played very well a couple of times, but it's not like we haven't had problems. We win a game and then we lose two players and another one who can't play more than 20 minutes. We have enough players with us tomorrow. Unlike at other times, Liverpool did not have a smooth group stage in the UEFA Champions League, but still managed to qualify for the last 16 with a 3-0 win over Ajax and set a new club record in the process.

With a ticket to the next round already in hand, Jürgen Klopp's side can boast that they have never missed out on the knockout stage under the German, and since his arrival in the 2017-18 season, the Reds have always been present in the knockout stage.

This represents a record for Liverpool, who despite being the third most titled team in the Champions League, had never managed to maintain a run of six consecutive seasons qualifying for the final round of the world's biggest club competition. The German's main concern, therefore, is the injuries that have depleted his squad, and against Ajax it was Jordan Henderson's turn to leave the field with a knee problem.

Klopp is worried about injuries

Now the real challenge for Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool will be to transcend beyond the last 16 and win the second Orejon in the Teutonic's Liverpool era, for if they fail to do so, the record of most consecutive seasons reaching the finals will be just another anecdote. On injuries, Klopp said: "I didn't have too much time to spend in the dressing room yet, but no-one came to me with any further or bigger problems."
