They dominated from start to finish and even had time for Jürgen Klopp to rest some first-team regulars ahead of the Premier League. The 4-0 win over LASK of Austria left the Reds in the next round of the Europa League and with first place assured. Toulouse and Union Saint-Gilloise had no advantage so the party was complete at Anfield. Liverpool ran out comfortable winners and took the lead they needed to avoid the last 16 and go straight through to the last 16 of the international competition.
Before the quarter of an hour the English were already 2-0 up. After 12 minutes, Joseph Gomez lifted in a cross from the right and Luis Diaz lobbed the ball past Tobias Lawal. LASK moved out of the middle and back into the centre circle as Mohamed Salah set up Cody Gakpo for a quick tap-in. The home side were in total control. In fact, they could have scored before the break but the crossbar denied the Greek, Konstantinos Tsimikas. However, Mohamed Salah added to the scoreline at the start of the second half, scoring his 199th goal for the Reds with a screamer from the penalty spot.
As if there was anything else missing on British soil, Klopp's side showed it by holding on even in stoppage time. It was there that Gakpo's double came as the Dutchman latched on to a lethal right-footed strike from inside the box. LASK, bottom of their group, will be dreaming of a Conference League place in the last round. Liverpool thrashed their opponents 4-0 in France to secure top spot in the group and advance directly to the last 16 of the Europa League.
Now qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League and one of the favourites to win the title, Liverpool can concentrate fully on the Premier League where they are two points behind leaders Arsenal but can take advantage of Manchester City's off-field problems in second place. Liverpool show that they are going for both titles.
