It is no secret to anyone that Darwin Nunez's debut season was closer to disappointment than fulfilling the expectations of him when he arrived at Anfield, having paid €80 million for him a year ago and having scored 34 goals in his last season with Benfica, Liverpool fans expected much more than the 9 goals he scored in the Premier League during the 2022-2023 campaign.
His adaptation to English football took longer than expected and even the language became an obstacle for Nunez to show his best level last season, reasons that provoked a lot of criticism from some sectors of the fans. However, our coach Jürgen Klopp has always expressed his full confidence that, sooner or later, Darwin Nunez will show what he is made of and shine with Liverpool.
It seems that Klopp is not the only one who has full confidence in the 24-year-old Uruguayan striker's abilities, as Liverpool legend and 2001 Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen said that Darwin "has the necessary characteristics to be a top player". "I didn't think he would be so quick and important when he came to Liverpool. When I saw him here in the Champions League last year he was absolutely brilliant and does things that take your breath away," he said.
In his statements made in February this year, Michael Owen assured that Darwin Nunez will have to train a lot to become a top player, however he dared to compare him with Didier Drogba, a Premier League legend. "I would compare him not because they have the same style, but because Drogba arrived on these shores, people made fun of him during the first year. He made a lot of mistakes but he got used to it," Owen said.
