Michael Owen hit Darwin Nunez hard after the incredible goal he missed for Liverpool. Despite the Uruguayan's missed effort, the English side still managed to win against Union Saint-Gillose. Darwin Nunez missed an incredible goal on Thursday in Liverpool's 2-0 home win over Union Saint-Gillose of Belgium. Liverpool won 2-0 against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield in the second round of Europa League Group E action.
The English side lead their group with an unblemished record. However, attention was focused on an unusual 'incident' during the match: Darwin Núñez's stunning miss on a goal that was almost certain to be scored. The home team executed a move from their own half on 16 minutes. They advanced with precise touches, and near the box, Mohamed Salah broke down the right side. He played a low pass into the box, where Nunez, in front of goal, deflected the ball wide. This would have been a goal clearly needed as, at the time, the match was 0-0.
“I just think this lad could be that type of player, with improvement he could be an unbelievable player but he’s got to brush up on the obvious, easy parts of his game.” Michael Owen on Darwin Nunez. It was so impressive that even the Reds' own manager Jurgen Klopp reacted as any Anfield fan would have reacted to the action. After that, before the end of the first half, Liverpool took the lead. Trent Alexander-Arnold shot from outside the box, and the goalkeeper gave away a rebound that Ryan Gravenberch tapped in to make it 1-0 after 44 minutes.
In the second half, Darwin Núñez did not return to the field of play. Manager Jurgen Klopp replaced him with Luis Díaz. So far, the Uruguayan has made nine appearances for Liverpool in the current season, including in the Premier League, Europa League and League Cup, and has scored a total of four goals. Late in the game, Diogo Jota led a counter-attack, broke into the box and finished with a goal to make the final score 2-0 after 90+2 minutes.
