Nico Williams: Liverpool target

Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, with new manager Arne Slot keen to bolster his attacking options.

The Spanish international has been a standout performer for the Basque club in recent seasons, catching the eye of several top European clubs with his pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal. His performances have led to comparisons with his older brother, Iñaki Williams, who has also enjoyed a successful career at San Mamés.

A perfect fit for Slot's system?

Williams' playing style is believed to align perfectly with the high-pressing, attacking football that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is aiming to implement at Anfield. The Dutch coach, who joined the Reds from Feyenoord this summer, is known for his attacking philosophy and has already made it clear that he wants to strengthen his squad in the forward areas.

Competition for Williams

However, Liverpool will face stiff competition for Williams' signature, with a number of other top European clubs also said to be interested in the young winger. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the Spaniard, while Premier League rivals Chelsea are also believed to be monitoring his situation.

Athletic Bilbao's stance

Athletic Bilbao are likely to demand a significant fee for Williams, who is under contract at San Mamés until 2027 and reportedly earns £180,000 a week. The Basque club have a proud history of developing young talent and are reluctant to sell their best players. However, the lure of Champions League football and a big-money offer from Liverpool could tempt them to cash in.

Liverpool's need for reinforcements

Liverpool have struggled for consistency in recent seasons and are looking to rebuild their squad under Slot. The Reds have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and are expected to make further additions to their squad before the transfer window closes.

Williams would be a valuable addition to Liverpool's squad and would provide the team with a much-needed injection of pace and creativity. However, the Reds will face a tough challenge to sign the Spaniard, with a number of other clubs also interested in his services.
