The statements made by Elon Musk's father about the magnate's interest in acquiring Liverpool have caused a stir, but the chances of this purchase going through are low, considering various factors ranging from Musk's political convictions to his known support for Manchester United.
Elon Musk's name has resonated strongly around Liverpool Football Club following the statements of his father, Errol Musk, who stated in an interview with Times Radio that his son has expressed interest in buying the club. "I can't comment on that, they'll put the price up! Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn't mean he's buying it. He would like to, yes, obviously. Anyone would, me too! His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool and we were lucky enough to meet quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some members of my family. So we're attached to Liverpool, you know," Errol Musk declared.
While Musk's fortune, estimated at over $400 billion, would allow him to acquire a Premier League club without any problems, his potential arrival at Anfield raises doubts and rejection among the Red fanbase.
One of the main reasons for this resistance is due to Musk's right-wing political leanings, which clash with the values that have traditionally represented Liverpool as a club and the city itself. Furthermore, an even more decisive factor is Musk's confessed support for Manchester United, Liverpool's eternal rival.
In August 2022, even before the Glazer family announced the sale of Manchester United, Musk posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that he was going to buy the club. When asked by a user about the veracity of his statement, Musk replied: "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I'm not buying any sports teams. Although, if it were any team, it would 1 be Manchester United. They were my favourite team as a kid."
This precedent makes Musk's preference for Manchester United clear, which further hinders the possibility of him becoming the owner of Liverpool.
Moreover, according to The Times on Tuesday, Liverpool's current owners have no intention of selling the club to Musk, and there has been no contact between the two parties. The English media outlet also points out that Liverpool is not taking the statements of Musk's father seriously.
In conclusion, although Elon Musk's interest in Liverpool has generated some media attention, the chances of a purchase being made are practically nil. The lack of intention to sell by the current owners, Musk's political convictions, and above all his recognised support for Manchester United, make this possibility highly improbable. Errol Musk's statements seem to remain a simple anecdote without further significance in the future of Liverpool Football Club.
