Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will be sidelined for an indefinite period after suffering a hamstring injury during Sunday's 5-0 win over West Ham United. The England international was forced off the pitch after just 37 minutes following a recurrence of the problem.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, manager Arne Slot confirmed the severity of the injury: "As you saw today, Joe Gomez picked up an injury. When a player tells you they have to come off, you have to take them off. In a sprint, we all know that’s a hamstring and that’s going to take a while to recover. I don’t know how long, but he’s going to be out for a while. These things can happen in a season.”
Gomez's injury is a significant blow to Liverpool, who have already been dealing with a number of injury problems this season. The English centre-back has been a key player for the Reds and his absence will be felt.
The Liverpool medical team will conduct further tests to determine the extent of the injury and the exact recovery time. It is expected that Gomez will be sidelined for several weeks, but the absence could be longer depending on the severity of the problem.
With Gomez out, manager Arne Slot will have to find a replacement for the centre-back position. Youngster Jarell Quansah came on as a substitute for Gomez and could be given more opportunities in the first team.
Gomez's injury is just the latest in a long line of injury problems for the player. The English defender has suffered several injuries throughout his career, which has disrupted his progress.
