Liverpool remain at the top of the Premier League, while still in contention for the Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup, and are serious contenders to win all the titles due to the high standard they have shown so far. Much of Anfield's success so far is thanks to the fact that the whole team has remained at a high level, and the defence has been second to none.
It has been the lower half of the team that in many games has carried the burden of victory by not allowing any attack from the opposing team to get through. Although injuries have plagued Jürgen Klopp and his team throughout the season, the lower half of the team has held up very well despite the combis forced by injuries.
With injuries to Alisson Becker, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander, Ibrahima Konaté, Conor Bradley and now Kostas Tsimikas, Liverpool have really struggled, yet all players have shown their quality when required. Players like Matip, Gomez, Tsimikas who had not had so much regularity have now made good use of it.
The level of the latter has increased a lot and their confidence has risen as the games have gone by, as it was hard for them to shine in their first few appearances and it has been consistency that has made them improve, and in the Premier League the team has only conceded 16 goals and scored 39 goals, where the defence has shone thanks to their great work.
Liverpool's defence has had a tough time, with all but captain Virgil Van Dijk injured this season, despite having played 19 and a total of 1,618 minutes, according to Transfermarkt. The Dutchman has been injury-free and has been one of the most consistent performers this season, so the captain's badge has suited him well.
