Darwin Núñez: Would Selling Him in January Be a Mistake?

The future of Darwin Núñez at Liverpool remains a topic of debate, especially amid speculation about a possible departure during the January transfer window. Despite not fully meeting expectations since his arrival from Benfica in 2022, letting go of the Uruguayan could prove counterproductive for the Reds.

An Early Transfer?

Recent reports claim Liverpool turned down an $85 million (€81 million) offer from Al-Hilal for the 25-year-old forward. According to Didi Hamann, selling him now would be a mistake, given that the club is still competing in four tournaments and could play up to 30 matches in the next four months.

"You need a strong and deep squad. Letting him go now would be a mistake. He’s a player who could become very important, and replacing him would be very costly."

However, Hamann suggests that a £100 million ($125 million) offer might be hard to refuse, though he emphasizes it’s not the right time to sell.

Núñez’s Fit at Arsenal

Hamann believes Núñez would be a transformative player for Arsenal, a team he says needs physical presence in attack to compete at the highest level.

"Arsenal won’t win anything major without a proper centre-forward. With Núñez, the team would change completely."

The former player explained that Núñez’s physicality and pace would be crucial in freeing up players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, creating spaces and destabilizing rival defences. However, he admits a move to Arsenal is unlikely given the rivalry between the two clubs in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal’s Attack Struggles

Hamann also analyzed Arsenal’s current attacking limitations:

"Arsenal needs a quick centre-forward who offers another option. Kai Havertz doesn’t have the speed to play in that position. Their attacking issues stem from a lack of physical presence."

With Núñez, Arsenal could gain an offensive focal point that would change the team’s dynamics, making them more dangerous in attack and offering greater versatility.

Conclusion

While Núñez has yet to hit his best form at Liverpool, selling him in January would be an unnecessary risk for Arne Slot’s team, especially with their involvement in multiple competitions. On the other hand, his potential fit in teams like Arsenal highlights the Uruguayan’s qualities and why he remains a valuable asset for the Reds.
