Liverpool FC have shown interest in midfielder Nico Gonzalez, currently at Porto, according to reports from Anfield Watch. The player, who came through the Barcelona youth system, could become an option to reinforce the English team's midfield.
Gonzalez, 22, joined Porto from Barcelona in a transfer that amounted to $9 million. The Catalan club included a clause that gives him 40% of any profit Porto makes on a future sale of the player.
Gonzalez's contract with Porto includes a $62 million release clause. If Liverpool decide to activate it, Barcelona would receive $21.2 million as part of the deal. Anfield Watch suggests that the English club are seriously considering this option, having closely followed the player's development at Porto.
Gonzalez has participated in all 15 league games that Porto have played so far this season. He is characterised by being a midfielder with range, capable of performing both in recovery and playmaking roles.
Liverpool also maintain their interest in Martín Zubimendi, a target they already had during the last summer transfer market. However, Zubimendi opted to remain at Real Sociedad. Given this situation, González is presented as another alternative to strengthen the midfield.
Liverpool scouts have reportedly watched several Porto games this season, and González's performance has repeatedly drawn attention. The player is under contract with Porto until 2028, while Barcelona retain an active buy-back option until next summer, which would allow them to re-sign him for $31 million.
Should Barcelona not exercise this option in 2025, any club interested in González, including Liverpool, would have to negotiate the payment of the $62 million release clause. Porto, for its part, has no intention of easily parting with the player, given his importance in the team.
In short, Nico Gonzalez has become a target for Liverpool, who are looking to strengthen their midfield. The possible transfer would involve a considerable sum and the involvement of Barcelona due to the clause included in the agreement with Porto. The monitoring by Liverpool scouts and the interest in a player profile with Gonzalez's characteristics suggest that the English club could make an offer in the future.
