After Jurgen Klopp's side failed to complete a historic comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu and were eliminated 6-2 on aggregate by Real Madrid, former Reds player Jamie Carrgher's detailed analysis revealed that one defensive player was not up to the task during the 90 minutes.
Although Liverpool's elimination was all but sealed at Anfield, the second leg on Madrid soil was expected to be more aggressive and accurate from the Reds, with the likes of Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and most notably Trent Alexander-Arnold, a defensive player who left a lot to be desired in his individual duel with Vinicius Junior.
TAA's defensive shortcomings were starkly exposed by Carragher during a post-match broadcast, with the Reds star claiming that the English defender is not an absolute certainty at right-back, with his errors a crucial factor in Liverpool's chances of keeping them out of contention for yet another Champions League win. "If Liverpool are trying to qualify for the UCL annually, I'm not sure Trent is your man at right-back..."
It is clear that elimination for the Reds' right-sided defender takes a back seat to the average poor display that could impact on his continuity in the starting line-up during these final Premier League games, with the man in desperate need of that FIFA break to digest what has happened and not make Carragher's statements pointing to a possible complete substitution from the team worthwhile.
