After our Liverpool finally made its long-awaited debut in the 2023-2024 Premier League season, we have finally been able to see the team in an official competitive match, in which beyond the draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, it has served to make us realize -if anyone had any doubts- that the team needs to continue to strengthen and that if not, it will be very difficult to aspire to fight to win the Premier League title.
Since the preseason and considering the departures of two extremely important players for Jürgen Klopp's scheme such as Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, we have scored a lot of goals and with great ease. It is enough to see that, during the five preparation matches the team had, we conceded 11 goals.
In the game against Chelsea, even though we started winning and the team was inches away from taking a 2-0 lead, they also showed a lot of weaknesses from the defensive midfield to the defense itself, as in less than five minutes the team conceded two goals, one of which was disallowed for offside but served to exemplify and expose the defensive shortcomings the squad currently has, so the need to sign a new central defender - in addition to the much talked about midfielder - has only become greater, but fortunately for Klopp one of his targets for that position could cost just £40 million.
We're talking about Portugal's Gonçalo Inacio, who currently belongs to Sporting Lisbon and is just 21 years old. Inacio has been one of Klopp's targets for months and recently signed a contract extension with the Portuguese club. However, that contract has been revealed to have a termination clause which amounts to £40 million, an amount that our Liverpool could easily pay in a matter of hours and, should they wish to, they could have the defender before the next Premier League game against Bournemouth.
