It was a night to forget at Anfield as Liverpool lost 5-2 to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and will have to play a heroic game in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Spain. However, throughout the match there were several controversial decisions by UEFA-appointed referee Istvan Kovacs.
The Reds took an early lead with a goal from Darwin Núñez, who took advantage of a great assist from Mohamed Salah. Then the Egyptian king himself took advantage of a mistake by the Real Madrid goalkeeper to make it 2-0. But then came the Liverpool debacle with several Real Madrid goals.
First came a goal from Brazilian striker Vinicius and then a mistake by Brazilian goalkeeper Allison saw the Spaniards level the score. But in the second half the disaster started for the Reds with a goal by the Brazilian defender Eder Militao. Then an own goal by Joe Gomez and finally Karim Benzema scored the fifth goal for the Spaniards.
The relationship between UEFA and Liverpool is not the best and tonight it was evident that the referee's decision to send this Romanian referee was a total mistake as he made some very controversial decisions. In the 53rd minute Darwin Núñez was pushed inside the box by Dani Carvajal but no penalty was awarded and the VAR did not review the play. And on Real Madrid's fourth goal there was an apparent offside by Rodrigo but the VAR did not review it either.
