Álvaro Morata is a saviour, a miracle worker and an essential goalscorer. Spain consummated a major miracle in Braga, beating Portugal away for the first time in 18 years thanks to a goal from the Atlético Madrid striker, who finished off a headed assist from Nico Williams, whose introduction to the game was as decisive as Pedri and Gavi's had been earlier. One of the most criticised players in the match was Liverpool striker Diogo Jota.

Spain won 1-0 in an inexplicable match, going from nothing to everything thanks to a late half-hour awakening after a bafflingly poor first hour and eventually winning the ultimate prize. They will play in the Nations League Final Four in June 2023 alongside the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia.

Spain wanted to, it is assumed, but neither could nor knew how to until the final stretch. After the setback suffered on Saturday in Zaragoza against Switzerland, they had to win in Braga against Portugal and did not seem in a position to do so until the last third of the match. Before that, they seemed to be leaving in the most absolute of silences, overwhelmed with a bland game until they were reactivated with the entry on the scene of Pedri and Gavi, who revolutionised what they could to a team unable to respond and who gave the definitive step forward with the entry of Nico.

The Spanish team moved the ball from side to side, without a shred of depth during a first half that was more than poor and ended goalless thanks to Unai Simon's superb response to an unexpected howitzer from Diogo Jota that would have rewarded the greater intensity of the Portuguese team.

Jota had a poor showing against Spain

Portugal, on the other hand, every time they had the ball they ran furiously, either looking for Cristiano Ronaldo (the years do not pass in vain) or Diogo Jota, who is accused of having played without soul. Bernardo Silva went deep and fought and Diogo Costa was a mere spectator in goal? A Spanish drama.
