This summer has not been what was expected for our Liverpool in terms of transfers, as at the beginning of the transfer window it was thought that the Anfield board would be one of the most active in terms of signing new players, but so far they have only been able to finalize two arrivals and instead there are already 20 players leaving the club this summer.

However, it seems that this number may still increase, as there are still a couple of players who do not seem to be very happy with their current role in the team and would be looking to leave Anfield in search of more minutes and more opportunities to play. In that sense, two players who could see their roles greatly diminished this coming season are Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, as everything seems to indicate that Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté will be the starting defenders who will hog the starting spot in Jürgen Klopp's scheme.

In addition, it has been said that one of the priorities for Klopp and the Anfield board before the transfer window closes is to sign a new central defender, so the chances of getting good minutes would be further reduced. However, neither Matip nor Gomez seem to be at odds with what their role will be next season, but there is one player, a defender who does seem to be and who could be on his way out of the club.

The defender who is set to leave Liverpool?

According to Football Insider, Nat Phillips, a 26-year-old central defender was once considered a possible replacement for Virgil van Dijk, but he has failed to establish himself in the first team and has now attracted the interest of several Championship sides, including Leeds United, who have him as their top priority.
