This summer transfer window is turning out to be very different to what our Liverpool originally had planned, as originally Jürgen Klopp and the Anfield board had planned to be one of the teams with the most additions after a disappointing season, but so far they have only managed to make two signings official during this summer.

Since the transfer window began, it was made known that the top priority would be to sign midfielders, as that would be the area of the field that would have more casualties. However, Klopp's other priority would be to sign at least one central defender as our club's defense was the worst in the top five of the Premier League.

While it is true that Virgil van Dijk is still one of the best defenders in all of English football, at 32 years of age, he does not have many years left playing at the highest level and Liverpool needs to start thinking about another player who can take the lead in the defensive line for the future. Several names have been mentioned as possible candidates to take that place, but Jürgen Klopp cannot afford to lose any more players this summer, and all indications are that one of the club's most promising defenders could be seriously considering leaving the club for good.

The defender who wants to leave Anfield

We are talking about Sepp van den Berg, a 21-year-old central defender who belongs to Liverpool and is on loan with Mainz 05. According to German media Bild, van den Berg does not rule out a permanent transfer to Mainz, as he finds it difficult to be active on a regular basis with the Reds. "I like Germany and the Bundesliga. Of course I can imagine not staying in Mainz just for one season. Liverpool are a great club, perhaps the largest in the world. But at the same time, it is also difficult to assert yourself there," he said.
