Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said he is happy for it to be understood that UEFA and other federations "can't do what they want", but insisted his support for the club and his rejection of the European Super League. The Anfield side communicated that they are committed to UEFA competitions and reject the idea of Super League, despite being part of the founders in April 2021.
"I like that we understand a little bit that UEFA and other federations can't just do what they want and that we have to talk. More competitions and more games and nobody says anything. I like that there is a little bit of movement, but my opinion about the Super League is the same," said the German. Despite the European Court of Justice ruling in favour of Super League, the six English clubs involved in it demonstrated their rejection between Thursday and Friday.
In 2021, there was an earthquake that threatened to change the structures of European football: the Super League, which proposed to follow the American model of competition. In a closed tournament, 15 teams would have a fixed place, regardless of their sporting performance, and another five would enter each season by invitation.
The project failed in that first attempt, but the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) has just ruled in favour of the Super League and its promoters. According to the European judges, UEFA and FIFA are committing an abuse of power and exercising a monopoly. This could be as important a milestone as the Bosman ruling in 1995, which allowed freedom of movement for European footballers.
