Alarm bells are ringing at Liverpool after Colombian winger Luis Diaz was substituted in the first half against Arsenal on Sunday with an injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks. In a fortuitous action in the 38′ minute of the first half, defensive midfielder Thomas Partey made a knee-high tackle on Diaz that left him feeling sore on the pitch.
As well as the pain caused by the defeat to Arsenal, there was also concern at Liverpool for Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Both players started Sunday's Premier League match, but left the pitch injured. "Luis we had to change him before (half-time), (it's) something with the knee, it's not good," said Reds boss Jürgen Klopp at the post-match press conference at the Emirates Stadium. The report undoubtedly sets alarm bells ringing.
The result was not Liverpool's only disaster against Arsenal
The player who is much criticised but was Liverpool's best against Arsenal
The Colombian striker, it is worth noting, felt a discomfort in his knee after a collision with Thomas Partey. Diaz was unable to continue playing and was replaced in the 42nd minute of the first half. Brazilian Roberto Firmino took his place. Klopp confirmed that both Diaz and Alexander-Arnold will have to undergo tests to determine the severity of their injuries, although he admitted the feelings were "not" good.
"They will have tests and then we will know more. I have no idea about the extent and, on top of that, Trent is also bad with his ankle," Klopp commented. On the Englishman - who only played the first 45 minutes - the tactician gave more details. "He twisted his ankle, it's not good. Trent never, in seven years, left if he could have kept playing. He was in too much pain, it started to swell up straight away, so we will have to see," he said.
Arsenal regained the Premier League lead on Sunday after beating Liverpool 3-2 in a hard-fought, hard-fought match at the Emirates Stadium in Matchday 10. Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners the lead 57 seconds into the game and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal (45′+5) after Uruguay's Darwin Nunez had equalised, assisted by Colombia's Luis Diaz (34′). Roberto Firmino equalised again (53′) but Saka scored the winner from the penalty spot (76′).
