Liverpool have made three signings so far this summer but it does not look like they will be making any more. Darwin Nunez is the marquee arrival up top, following Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern Munich.
Liverpool want to sign the midfield version of Joel Matip
Onana mainly played as a defensive midfielder last season. However, he also played in a central role and as an attacking midfielder on occasion. The Belgian has also filled in at centre-back, making him a versatile player who could suit the Premier League.
Such a trait is longed for in the English top flight, especially among those clubs with some form of European football to contend with. While players such as Onana can naturally play a variety of positions, they can also fill in during a potential injury crisis.
Liverpool used Fabinho in that ilk in the 2020/21 season, when Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all suffered long-term injuries. And despite Klopp ruling out another midfield signing in no-nonsense fashion earlier this week, it is clear they could do with another option. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered an injury in pre-season against Crystal Palace on Friday.
