On 3 September, one of the most evenly matched Merseyside derbies of recent times took place. Everton and Liverpool drew goalless at Goodison Park in a duel that had everything, starting with the similar situations that both teams are going through at the start of this season, without the best sporting sensations.
Luis Díaz was a starter in that match and contributed with his speed on the wing, although he did it much less than on other occasions, when he has more space to face and dribble the rival defenders. Much of that had to do with Scottish marker Nathan Patterson, who at times managed to neutralise the Colombian's usual bursts of pace.

Nearly 20 days after that game, Patterson spoke about his confrontation with Diaz and the great spirit he showed in stopping one of the most expensive players in football today. The 20-year-old, with a smile on his face, said the Colombian is probably "still" in his pocket, in response to a question posed to him by former striker James McFadden as they walked through Scotland's training centre.
"To be fair, it was a good game and he was a tough opponent," Patterson corrected after the little joke he played on the Colombian, who is also training with the Colombia national team today, but in the United States. "He's a great player at a great club, obviously it's a challenge for me to see what I can do and nullify his threats. I feel like I did it," he analysed.
This clip was quickly shared by Everton fan accounts, who applauded Patterson's 'banter' against Diaz, a figurehead for their fierce rivals. However, it should be added that the Scotsman acknowledged the Colombian's talent and also the nerves he felt when facing a derby with so much history, despite the fact that he had already experienced the Old Firm in his country between Rangers and Celtic.
