Playing in the Premier League and more so in a team like Liverpool is not for everyone, very few are the lucky ones who can boast that they played at the legendary Anfield, and above all, that the fans remember them. Such is the case of Englishman Daniel Sturridge, who after six years of playing for the Reds, now lives in the memories of the past, sheltered in the poor level of football that the Australian Professional Football League can provide.
After almost 15 million from Chelsea FC, Sturridge arrived at Liverpool in the winter of 2013, after being overlooked at Stanford Bridge by Rafa Benitez, who at the time relegated him from the squad following a hamstring injury. Daniel, who was already on the radar of former manager Brendan Rodgers, tasted success at Anfield, winning a historic UEFA Champions League (2018-2019) and shining in his new stint in the Premier League.

After a low level and more injuries littered his professional career, Sturridge left Mereyside on loan in 2018 and played a season with West Brom before returning the following year and leaving Anfield for Turkish football with Trabzonspor, where he arrived as a free agent after not being re-signed by the board after six years of service. In his final season with the Reds, Daniel made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists in 818 minutes.
Now the 33-year-old has thrown away what little prestige he had by being the worst signing in Perth Glory's history, and in the words of the board, Sturridge has not worked out. "We had high hopes for him, but it just hasn't worked out. It's difficult for him to be offered a new contract at the end of the season," club CEO Tony Pignata told SEN's The Global Game.
Daniel is awaiting the start of the new Australian A-League Men's season, where he hopes to continue for at least another six months with Perth Glory, who are reportedly looking at the high cost of keeping a former Three Lions international and Pool player who simply hasn't performed as expected. If things get worse, retirement could be on the mind of Sturridge, who has gone from glory to footballing hell in three years.
