Liverpool confirmed on Thursday that captain Jordan Henderson is leaving the club on a transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, who are coached by former team-mate Steven Gerrard. Through social media, Henderson said goodbye to all Reds fans. "It's hard to use words about the last 12 years and it's even harder to say goodbye," said the England international. "I will always be a Red. Until the day I die," he wrote.

Henderson, 33, spent 12 seasons at Liverpool. He led his club to the English championship title in 2020, breaking a 30-year wait, and was part of the squad that won the Champions League in 2019. "Being made Liverpool captain was one of the biggest honours of my life," he said. "From the day I was given the armband I did everything I could to behave as a Liverpool captain should," he said.

"Thank you for allowing me to be part of your club. Thank you for your support in good times and bad," he added in his message to the fans. Al Ettifaq is one of a number of Saudi Arabian clubs that are strengthening in the international market, in line with other Saudi Arabian clubs. They have already secured the services of Steven Gerrard as coach. "Now that his chapter at Anfield is coming to an end, everything will be in place.

Criticism

Henderson has a big problem to deal with because of his previous remarks in support of the LGBTQ+ community,' he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. It was the words that shocked Anfield because Jamie Carragher also questioned former team-mate Steven Gerrard's decision to accept to manage in Arabia.
