After winning a Premier League title and a Champions League, as well as two finals and multiple trophies, it was arguably a very risky decision to turn down the club. But Perr Schuurs is absolutely moving in the right direction.
The Dutch defender is on the verge of securing the first major transfer of his career with an £8m deal with Italian side Torino. What is significant is who Schuurs could replace in the Serie A team, without stopping to look at the price tag.
Earlier this summer, Gleison Bremer changed rivals in Turin by joining Juventus in a £40m deal. Bremer had become one of the most sought-after central defenders of the summer window. There is no doubt that Schuurs will also use this transfer as a springboard to something bigger, something bigger than Torino.
For now it is not guaranteed that he will follow in Bremer's footsteps and get a big contract in the future, but Schuurs is only 22 years old, confident enough in his ability to turn down the likes of Liverpool.
Sepp van den Berg also ended up signing for the Reds as a teenager, a year after Schuurs' chance and, unfortunately, he is nowhere near the level of his compatriot. What remains to be said is that by spurning Klopp, Schuurs was able to get four years of consistent football.
