With just over a week remaining in the January transfer window, Jürgen Klopp has so far resisted temptation to try and improve his Liverpool squad. On recent form, new faces are hardly needed as Liverpool made it 14 unbeaten in the Premier League with a 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday. The Reds are now five points clear at the top of the table and with Manchester City having a game in hand, the title race looks set to go down to the wire once again. January additions have made the difference in the past and could do so again if Liverpool is to end the season with silverware.
Surprise at Anfield, Salah's injury could cost Liverpool £22million
There continue to be links to defensive reinforcements amid a spate of injuries and uncertainty over the future of Joël Matip, who is out of contract at the end of the season. But any incoming is much likelier to come in the summer. Those moves may well wait until the next window even amid fresh links to a Premier League left-back and a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, should he not extend his contract at Anfield.
With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas both injured, Joe Gomez has proved to be a reliable deputy at left-back for Liverpool in recent weeks. But that has not stopped links to a number of potential reinforcements, most notably Wolves' Rayan Aït-Nouri. The Algerian is enjoying another good season in the Premier League and Liverpool has supposedly been monitoring his situation. A move this month appears unlikely but Football Insider reports the Reds are 'laying the groundwork' for a potential summer swoop.
Aït-Nouri is valued at around £50m by Wolves, who is reluctant to let him depart, with his contract running until 2026. But that will not deter Liverpool or Arsenal, the report states, with both clubs ready to test Wolves' resolve. Liverpool is reportedly showing interest in former Manchester City winger Leroy Sané, who could be sold by Bayern Munich this summer. Sané joined Bayern Munich in 2020 but has just 18 months remaining on his contract.
Klopp knows how serious Salah's injury is and wants this signing
Bayern will be under pressure to sell him this summer if he doesn't agree an extension and that has alerted Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham, according to Fichajes. Sané has often been deployed on the right wing by Bayern and could be an ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah as the Egyptian weighs up his future at Anfield beyond the end of his current contract. His title-winning experience with City would likely mean Sané would hit the ground running if he does move back to the Premier League. But Liverpool would have to pay a fortune for him and would rather just keep Salah.
