Ange Postecoglou was among those with some nice words. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed his surprise at Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp's decision to step down at Anfield. The Spurs coach was speaking around the time that his side was knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City.

"I guess I was as surprised as anyone else because he's a top manager and they are flying at the moment," Postecoglou replied when asked about his initial reaction to the news. The Australian, who was a boyhood Liverpool fan, was shocked by the news but also said that he could understand it to a certain point.

"But also understanding, at the back of my mind, all of us who have been in the game a while, it's the constant thought in your head because you know how much you need to put into the position," Postecoglou continued. "He's probably one of the unique ones; he will go down as one of the best."

"When you do that at one club that is the uniqueness of it," Postecoglou added. "You have to rebuild teams all the time within the same context. It is totally understandable. "My only wish is he does stay out of the game a little while for a couple of reasons. The obvious one about the competitiveness but also it gives me a bit of hope that when I call it a day I am not going to get the urge to come back too quickly!"

The ideal candidate?

Postecoglou has been put forward as being among the candidates to take over from Klopp in some quarters, including in The Athletic. The former Celtic manager has only been at Tottenham since the summer but has instilled a much-improved playing style and results have generally been quite good despite the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
