Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed concern over the form of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez under Arne Slot. Carragher claims Nunez is simply "not playing well enough" and will find it difficult to regain a starting place against competition from Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
Nunez and his goal drought:
Nunez has struggled to find the goal this season, scoring just four goals in 24 appearances in all competitions. Despite being given playing time, especially following Diogo Jota's injury in October, the Uruguayan has failed to establish himself as an undisputed starter.
Loss of prominence to Diaz and Jota:
The former Benfica striker appears to have lost ground in the team's hierarchy, being relegated to the centre-forward position by Luis Diaz. Furthermore, Jota's return from injury further complicates the situation for Nunez, who could become Slot's third option in that role.
Nunez's last Premier League start dates back to the 2-2 draw against Newcastle in early December. While he did score in the 2-1 EFL Cup quarter-final win against Southampton, his performance was not enough to earn him a place in the starting XI against Tottenham. In that game, Luis Diaz shined with a double, consolidating his position as centre-forward.
Carragher's view:
Jamie Carragher has predicted that Nunez will struggle to get back into the starting line-up due to Diaz's good form and the return of Jota. Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher claimed: "Darwin Nunez is not playing well enough. He scored in midweek but it wasn't a great performance. Slot is getting his best attackers back. In the past it would have been Gakpo with Jurgen Klopp playing through the middle. But Gakpo is always on the left and Luis Diaz has been a revelation in that false nine position, centre-forward. But now they've got Jota back so I think in two weeks it will be him at the top end of the pitch."
Slot's defence of Nunez:
Earlier this month, Liverpool manager Arne Slot defended Nunez, praising his work rate despite his lack of goals. Slot said: "For me he has an impact. If you just look at goals, he hasn't scored the amount of goals he wants to score, or we want our No. 9 to score, but he does have an impact on his work rate. He's part of a team that's scoring a lot of goals and winning a lot. But of course as a No. 9 you want to score goals and that's definitely what he wants as well. I'm not just judging Mo [Salah] on his goals. I'm not just judging Darwin on his goals. I'm judging them on their work rate and what they bring to the team and that's been positive so far."
Bottom line:
Jamie Carragher has expressed his concerns about Darwin Nunez's performance at Liverpool.
Nunez has scored just four goals in 24 appearances this season.
He has lost out to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
Carragher believes Nunez will struggle to get back into the starting line-up.
Arne Slot has defended Nunez, praising his work rate.
Darwin Nunez's situation at Liverpool is a source of debate. Although he has the backing of his manager, his lack of goals and internal competition complicate his situation. The Uruguayan striker's future at Anfield will depend on his ability to improve his performance and convince Arne Slot that he deserves a place in the starting XI.
