Jürgen Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool has caused shockwaves around the football landscape. His announcement this week felt out of the blue, with his new evolved Liverpool side at the top of the table and in another cup final. Klopp extended his contract with Liverpool only just over a year ago, but revealed that he is lacking in energy and is struggling with the demands of the job after nine long years in charge.

Klopp’s announcement in January gives Liverpool time to find a replacement, and Klopp’s best friend in football, current Norwich City boss David Wagner, has spoken out about Klopp’s decision to step away from Liverpool come the end of June. Klopp and Wagner have been friends for more than 30 years, with the pair first meeting at Mainz when they were playing in 2. Bundesliga. Klopp and Wagner’s friendship became so strong that eventually Wagner was Klopp’s best man for his wedding in 2005.
In a fitting irony, Liverpool’s first match post-Klopp’s announcement is against Wagner’s Norwich side in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield. "I wasn't surprised, but when he told me, I was happy for him. I know how hard and difficult this decision was and is,” said Wagner of Klopp's announcement. "It shows a lot of personality, character and bravery to make this decision, but I think only he knows what is best for him. We both know how exhausting and challenging this business can be, nobody has more understanding of this decision than I do. If he knows that it is the best for him, then I'm happy for him. He will have a great time ahead of him for sure."
The next several months will have the feel of a farewell tour for the 56-year-old, yet Wagner believes Klopp deserves a sabbatical from the game. "Nobody should underestimate that he has been in this job for 22 or 23 years with only three months in between Dortmund and Liverpool where he had a very short break," Wagner continued.
After announcing his exit, Jurgen Klopp's big problem at Anfield
“There were not a lot of football clubs where he was open to shortening his break, but Liverpool was one of them. In every business, when you work for 25 years, there is a moment when you feel it, even if you enjoy it."
