Not all was good in the win over Ajax

After the agonising win over Ajax, with Joel Matip scoring late on, Jurgen Klopp spoke to the press and highlighted his side's "character" to take all three points on a night when it seemed the ball didn't want to go in. Liverpool dominated proceedings at Anfield, but the Dutch side made life difficult for them when they equalised after 27 minutes with their first clear-cut chance on goal.

The Reds went for the win with South Americans Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez on the pitch, and were rewarded late on. This is what Jürgen Klopp had to say after the game: "The reaction was good, not perfect but it was good. At half-time we told the boys that after the goal our pressure didn't seem as strong as before. It was clear that we had to keep playing football because it was very difficult for Ajax to defend today, they had to work hard.

Jamie Carragher's surprise message after Liverpool win

He added: "Character was the most important thing, but nobody gets carried away tonight, it's not that the boys sat in the dressing room and can't put their arms down (to keep celebrating). Actually, it's more of a relief. We proved we could do it to ourselves and to the world. The guys really reacted, I really liked that.

"The reaction to show that we are still capable of doing this kind of thing, that was the most important thing tonight," the German completed on that subject. I don't know the exact number, but I heard we had 25 shots. Which is good, against a strong team, with a lot of confidence, absolutely convinced of the way they play, and we caused them a lot of problems. But it was a step backwards to concede a goal on the opponent's first chance".

<strong>We were playing another sport</strong>

He explained: "I think if you put the two games, Napoli and tonight's, side by side, you probably wouldn't recognise that it's the same sport," he commented. "We were a completely different team: the football we played, the way we defended, everything was different. A lot more intensity, a lot more aggression, braver, smarter. As I said, everything was better. It was a first step, nothing more, no more than that, but it was all good," he closed.
