The historic rivalry between these two footballers has also been carried through to the individual awards as the most special. Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi. The name of either of these footballers doesn't come to mind without the other also coming up in conversation.

 

One of the most historic rivalries in the world of sport is coming to an end on the pitch. The now PSG player, who has been linked to Barcelona all his life, and the Manchester United star - he started out at Sporting de Portugal, went on to play for the Red Devils, excelled at Real Madrid and then played for Juventus - are the ones with the most individual awards, with the Ballon d'Or on everyone's mind.

Since Cristiano Ronaldo won the highest personal distinction for a footballer in 2008 still as a Red Devil, the next nine have alternated being able to enjoy them in LaLiga. Another LaLiga player, Luka Modric (Real Madrid) broke the double hegemony in 2018, but a year later Leo Messi won the Ballon d'Or again while still at Barcelona, winning his seventh, to the Portuguese's current five.

<strong>The same goals</strong>

2017 was the last year in which Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or. By winning his fifth Ballon d'Or, Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Leo Messi thanks to his fourth Champions League, where he was the top scorer once again - two goals in the final. This time it was the other way around, as the Argentine scored more goals for Barcelona than the Portuguese did for Los Blancos - 54 to 42 - but it did not prevent him from finishing second in the edition that Neymar repeated as third. Only 2 Portuguese players have scored 50 Premier League goals: Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota.
