The 21-year-old midfielder's outstanding performance for Argentina at the World Cup stoked rumours that he might join the Premier League. Rui Costa, the president of Benfica, reportedly stated earlier this week that Fernandez might leave the Lisbon team in January if his release clause is reached, according to statements posted online.
That release clause is reportedly worth €120 million (£106 million), which is a lot more than what Liverpool paid the same club for Darwin Nunez last summer despite the possibility that the asking price turned away teams like Liverpool, Benfica has issued a statement rejecting Costa's claim that Fernandez may move in January and stating his current status as follows:
"SL Benfica affirms that Club President Rui Costa never said the things that are being reported in Italy by DAZN,"Sport Lisboa e Benfica confirms that it will continue to rely on midfielder Enzo Fernández through the remainder of the campaign. "Fernandez joined Portugal from River Plate only last summer, and his contract there runs through 2027.
The Liverpool Echo has refuted suggestions made on Thursday in Ecuador that Liverpool would make a bid of €?70 million (£62 million) for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo. They assert, "These rumours are not accurate, and Liverpool are not in negotiations with Brighton regarding a deal to sign Caicedo.
