Klopp with a very worried face

Mohamed Salah was in charge of the victory for Jürgen Klopp's side. Liverpool hosted Newcastle United on Matchday 20 of the Premier League at Anfield, where Jürgen Klopp's side won 4-2 to take sole leadership of the 2023-2024 season.

The first half was evenly matched, with neither side able to open the scoring, and it was not until the 49th minute when Mohamed Salah took advantage of his shot to make it 1-0 and beat Martin Dúbravka's goal. The equaliser came in the 54th minute thanks to a shot from Alexander Isak, but the joy for the visitors would last 20 minutes, as in the 74th minute a combination of passes between Salah and Jota led to Curtis Jones getting the second goal for the Anfield side, although in the 78th minute the home side took the lead, as Cody Gakpo appeared to make it 3-1.

Despite going behind, Eddie Howe's side looked to get back on the scoreboard and in the 81st minute Sven Botman made it 3-2, but in the 86th minute Mohamed Salah's shot from the spot sealed Liverpool's victory. After the victory, the German coach's side are now the sole leaders with a three-point lead over Aston Villa, who are their closest challengers with 42 points from 20 games played.

The worst news

Elsewhere, Newcastle slipped to their third successive defeat, their last win coming against Fulham on 16 December. The worst news for Liverpool was confirmed when Jürgen Klopp announced that Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai has a hamstring problem that will keep him out for several weeks. He joins Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo who are away with their national teams.
