Seven days ago Liverpool thrashed Ten Hag's Manchester United 7-0 to give the Reds hope of an almost impossible comeback at one of the worst venues in Europe: the Santiago Bernabeu. However, if there was any kind of illusion, it was squandered after the 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth in the Premier League. Klopp's side have won just one game away from Anfield so far in 2023.
On the downside, before the match against the Cherries the scenario was quite positive. They had managed to palliate their weaknesses with great performances from their attackers. Especially against Manchester United. On that day, Klopp's system worked like a charm. And it looked like it would serve as a mental click ahead of the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Real Madrid.
Madrid' cushion is huge. After their 5-2 drubbing at Anfield, Ancelotti's side are heading straight for the Champions League quarter-finals. In fact, they can afford to lose by up to two goals. If they go down by three, they would be playing for their ticket in extra time. However, that tremendous goal against the 'red devils' commanded by Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo left a minimum percentage open for the match at the Bernabéu. But then came Bournemouth. An opponent that started from the relegation zone before the opening whistle and that, on paper, should lend itself to confirm Liverpool's good sensations.
If the Reds are unable to eliminate Real Madrid, several sources in Liverpool have reported that several players will leave the club due to underperformance and contract expiry: Nat Phillips, James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naiby Keita, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Adrian.
